McCREADIE PULLS HAT TRICK AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY
BREWERTON,
NY....."Barefoot" Bob McCreadie took the lead with five laps
to go in Friday night's DIRT Modified feature event at Brewerton
Speedway and took his third straight win on Kinney Drugs/Nice 'N' Easy
Family Autograph Night. Rob Keller continued his hot streak in the
IMCA Modifieds, while Tony Buffa took his sixth win of the year in the
Dwarf cars and the West family name stayed in victory lane in the 4
Cylinders, but this Friday night it was John West getting his career
first feature win.
Roger Phelps led the first lap of
the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature event, with Jimmy Phelps taking control
on lap two. Dale Planck and Pat Ward stormed into the top five
along with Tim Fuller as they battled three wide for position.
Planck broke through the battle, slipping past Roger, then taking the
lead from Jimmy on lap 6.
As Planck pulled away out front,
Ward moved past Jimmy into second and set sail after Planck.
Further back, Danny Johnson had cracked the top five with Bob McCreadie
and Tim McCreadie battling right behind him. Bob moved past Danny
and into the top five by lap 12 as Billy Decker closed in on Tim and on
Danny. Up front, Ward and Planck had a tremendous side by side
battle for the lead, with Ward actually scored the leader on lap 16.
One lap later, Planck was back on the point.
On lap 19, "Barefoot"
was in third and putting heavy pressure on Ward. The race's first
yellow flew on lap 25 for a tangle between Bob Bennett and Ryan Baye.
On the ensuing restart, Ward flew past Planck and McCreadie slipped by
as well. Decker and Tim McCreadie also moved forward as Planck's
car began to fade.
With five laps to go, McCreadie
got under Ward on the backstretch and took the lead for good as Tim
McCreadie slid under Decker. "Barefoot" held the lead
until the checkers flew with Ward a couple of car lengths back.
Tim McCreadie, Decker, and Jimmy Phelps rounded out the top five.
DIRT Modified heats were won by Jimmy Phelps, Planck, and Ward in a
photo finish over Tim McCreadie.
Bill Klinkowsky had the lead at
the start of the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, but the next five laps
were a scramble as no less than six cars battled three and sometimes
four wide for the lead. Rob Keller emerged from this group as the
leader on lap 6 and pulled away to a comfortable margin. Don
Alvord settled into second and spent most of the race holding off Sean
Lias and Bob Bradt. As the race passed halfway, Randy Hall
returned to the top five after nearly spearing an infield tire marker
early on, with Cory Fachini in tow.
Keller was not to be denied
another Brewerton win as he took the checkers once again. Bradt
and Hall scrambled into second and third in the final two laps, with
Alvord sliding to fourth and Fachini taking the fifth spot. IMCA
Modified heats were won by Keller, Ron O'Neil, and Kevin Battelle.
The Dwarf car 20 lapper saw Dan
Boyce grab the early lead, holding off Pat Pontello until Troy Van Allen
stormed into second on lap 5. Van Allen was leading on the next
lap as Tony Buffa gave chase. Van Allen found Buffa on his back
bumper a couple of laps later, with Buffa moving into the lead at lap
10.
In the second half of the
feature, Buffa kept a comfortable distance between himself and Van Allen
in and out of traffic, scoring his sixth win of the season. Van
Allen's car failed coming down to the flag, but he was able to coast
across the line, nipping Boyce for second. Dennis Johnson and
Barry Virts rounded out the top five. Dwarf car heats were won by
Mark Weigelt, Buffa, and Boyce.
Lloyd Hinton was the early leader
of the 15-lap 4 Cylinder feature, but pulled into the infield with a
problem after the race's third yellow on lap 3. That handed the
lead to John West, with Brian Evenden and Harvey Calkins battling for
second. Evenden and Calkins tangled on lap 9, allowing Roger West
to close in. The Wests battled furiously for the lead, with John
holding off Roger for his first career 4 Cylinder win. Bob Whipple
survived many skirmishes in the field to come from 21st to third at the
finish, trailed by Doug Battles and Jeff Amidon. 4 Cylinder heats
were won by Calkins, John West, and Hinton.
Next Friday night there will be a
Junior Fan Club Pitside Party along with a full program of DIRT
Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Dwarf cars and 4 Cylinders. The first
ever Go Till You Blow contest will also be presented. Gates open
at 5:30pm and racing starts at 7:30pm.
