DECKER CELEBRATES 2007 BREWERTON TITLE WITH VICTORIA 200 MODIFIED MINI-SERIES VICTORY
BREWERTON, NY – Willy Decker of Vernon celebrated his 2007 DIRTcar Modified track championship on Friday at Brewerton Speedway with a post-season win in the Victoria 200 Rules Modified Mini-Series 35-lap special after holding off the late race charge of Jimmy Phelps. Decker started in the fifth position and took the lead on lap 25 from polesitter Ryan Phelps who led the entire race to that point. The win for Decker behind the wheel of the Westmoreland Golf Club No.1x Bicknell machine was worth $2,000 and the fifth of the 2007 race season. Also winning were Greg Kimball for his first ever in the IMCA Modifieds, Russell Erwin in the New York State Championship event for 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and Jerry Herbert in the 4-Cylinder Enduros.
Ryan Phelps and Sean Beardsley paced the 35-lap Victoria 200 Modified Mini-Series feature event down to the green flag with Phelps racing out to the early race lead. Willy Decker almost immediately fell behind Phelps and began putting pressure on him for the lead. At the halfway point, the top five was Ryan Phelps, Willy Decker, Jimmy Phelps, Bobby Varin, and Pat Ward. Decker caught Phelps and took the race lead on lap 25. With just several laps to go, Decker had pressure from behind as Jimmy Phelps and Alan Johnson caught him. At the checkers, the winner was Decker over Jimmy Phelps, Alan Johnson, Ryan Phelps, and Bobby Varin. With his strong second place finish, Jimmy Phelps became the champion of the Brewerton Victoria 200 Mini-Series and will be one of only two guaranteed starters for the $25,000 to win Victoria 200 at Fulton Speedway on September 29.
Greg Kimball won his first ever 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event after a late race restart with two laps to go jumbled the field. The race was the battle of the Anderson brothers and their father Bill who led the opening two circuits. Pete Anderson took the lead on lap 3 from his father as Bill and Bill Jr. pressured him from behind. On lap 10, Bill Jr. took the race lead which he held until lap 14 when Pete retook the top spot. The restart with two laps to go shook the lineup up but no caution came out, giving the win to an excited Kimball who has worked hard to reach the winner’s circle. Bill Anderson Jr. was forced to settle for second, followed by Aaron Jacobs, Pete Anderson, and Bill Anderson.
The 25-lap New York State Championship event for the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks was a wild affair with winner Russell Erwin leading every lap but lap 9 after a battle with Chuck Powelczyk. Powelczyk tried everything he had but could not hold off the invading Erwin, who started on the pole. Powelczyk was forced to settle for second, with Glen Erwin, Darren Hurlburt, and 2007 champion Claude Hutchings Jr. fifth in a borrowed car.
The 15-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro was won by Jerry Herbert over son Josh Herbert, the 2007 track champion. Art Dupra, Witt Chilson, and Devon Rookey completed the top five finishers.
The next event on the Brewerton Speedway 2007 race schedule is also the final event and the most popular of the year as the track will host the annual Super DIRT Week event on Thursday October 4. The 358-Modifieds will hold their 75-lap Mr. DIRT Tour event with all the big names in town. The ESDCA Mod Lites will also be on hand for a 25-lap championship. Gates will open at 5:30pm, with racing at 7:30pm. For more information, contact the track office at (315) 668-6906, the raceline at (315) 668-RACE, or visit www.brewertonspeedway.com.
PIT NOTES…Track conditions continue to be fantastic on the spacious 1/3-Mile “D-Shaped DIRT Demon”. The track was wide, smooth, and offered multiple 3 and 4-wide lanes to race on as new track preparer Jeremie Corcoran is doing his magic. Nearly all of the Modifieds sported sail panels on the back end of their machines.
