HULSIZER CHARGES TO SECOND DIRTcar MODIFIED WIN OF 2007 AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY
BREWERTON, NY – Steve Hulsizer of Bridgeport charged from the twelfth starting position to take the lead from Chuck Bower with just three laps to go in the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature last Friday at Brewerton Speedway on www.cnyjunkcarswanted.com Night. The second win of the 2007 race season for the driver of the Thompson Road Tavern No. 88 Troyer chassis machine was worth $1,500. Also visiting victory lane were Rich Townsend in the IMCA Modifieds, Dan Williams in the ESDCA Mod Lites, and Claude Hutchings Jr. in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks. The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club winners were Billy Kisselstein (1950s), Norman Richardson (1970s), and Ally Amell (1970s).
When the green flag flew on the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature, front row starter Kyle Lewis raced out to the early lead. Third place starter Chuck Bower, former track champion, then took over the top spot on lap 3 from Lewis. Bower, who has been close several times this year and totally shut out of victory lane since 2003, was hungry for a win. Dan Vauter raced into second place when on lap 11, contact was made with Vauter spinning towards the wall in turn one.
At the halfway point, the top five was Bower, Jim Witko Jr., Steve Hulsizer, Tim Sears, and Kevin Bates. Steve Hulsizer was on a mission and got by Witko on lap 16 as he set his sights on Bower. Hulsizer caught Bower as the two drivers began dueling for the lead. Point leader Wily Decker was racing towards the front and as high as third when he broke on lap 25, forcing him pitside and out of the event. Bower slipped high on lap 32 allowing Hulsizer to get on by for the lead. At the finish line, the winner was Hulsizer, with Bower, Witko, newcomer Jeremy Smith, and Alan Johnson who was driving the Deek Decker Deuce machine. Rounding out the top ten, it was Kevin Bates, Paul Kinney, Tom Sears, Lance Willix, and Tim Sears.
In the IMCA Modified division, Rich Townsend of Hastings ended a two year victory drought with his first win of 2007. Townsend started fourth and took the initial lead until lap 6 when current national IMCA point leader Dale Caswell took command. Caswell then broke on lap 10 handing the lead back to Townsend who led the remainder of the 20-lap event. Veteran Les Hubbard was second, followed by Pete Anderson, Calvin Painter, and Greg Kimball.
Dan Williams of Pennellville returned to Brewerton Speedway after a week suspension for a technical infraction to win his ninth 20-lap ESDCA Mod Lite feature of the year. Williams charged from the sixteenth starting position and took the lead from brother Doug with just two laps to go. Rocco Leone was the early leader until Justin Crisafulli took control on lap 7. Matt Magner then led for three laps beginning on lap 9 until Doug Williams took the top spot on lap 12.
4-Cylinder Super Stock point leader Claude Hutchings Jr. of Sauquoit won his sixth 15-lap feature of the race season after leader Chuck Powelczyk broke a wheel and flipped in turn 4. Powelczyk was uninjured but done for the night, handing the lead to Hutchings, who started eighth. Aron Backus and Jessica Herbert led the first two laps, respectively until Powelczyk took control on lap 3.
The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club brought 20 cars for their annual appearance at the “D-Shaped DIRT Demon” with former Street Stock racer Billy Kisselstein winning the 1950’s division, Norman Richardson the victor in the 1960’s class, and veteran racer Ally Amell winning the 1970’s division.
