STEVE HULSIZER HAMMERS DOWN FIRST WIN OF 2007 AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY

BREWERTON, NY Steve Hulsizer of Bridgeport made his long awaited return at Brewerton Speedway special after nearly two months away on Friday in the DIRTcar Modified division on Nice N’ Easy Grocery Shoppes Night. Hulsizer had been sidelined with motor problems, but that all went away with his first 35-lap victory of the 2007 race season for the driver of the Thompson Road Tavern, Bicknell No. 88. Other winners on Nice N’ Easy Grocery Shoppes Night were Dale Caswell in the IMCA Modifieds, Doug Williams in the ESDCA Mod Lites, Claude Hutchings Jr. in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and Josh Herbert in the 4-Cylinder Enduros.

Billy Price and Kyle Lewis paced the DIRTcar Modified feature starting field down to the green flag with Lewis jumping out to the early lead. Billy Dunn took the race lead on lap 5 from Lewis as the pair battled back and forth for the top spot early in the event. Hulsizer came from outside the handicapping in the twelfth starting position and took the lead on lap 18 from Billy Dunn. Hulsizer dominated the remainder of the event. On the final lap as Hulsizer was taking the checkered flag, Mike Defreitas spun in turn 4 juggling the remainder of the top five. Billy Dunn and Alan Johnson were collected and fell down several positions in the finishing order.

Paul Kinney, who drives the Nice N’ Easy Modified, was forced to settle for second, his best ever Brewerton showing coming on his sponsor’s night. Kevin Bates was third, followed by Roy Bresnahan, Willy Decker, Tom Sears, Billy Dunn, Dan Vauter, Jim Witko, and Kyle Lewis.

In the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature event, Dale Caswell of West Monroe did it again by winning his record eighth straight feature, once again over close rival Kevan Cook. Caswell came from the eleventh stating spot and took the lead from Cook on lap 7 enroute to the win. Rich Townsend led the opening six circuits. Cook was forced to settle for second, followed by Townsend, Pete Anderson, and Rob Keller Jr.

Doug Williams of Pennellville won his second ESDCA Mod Lite feature event of the year in controversial fashion after contact with Rocco Leone in the final turn. Invader Mow Degrasse was second, with Tod Simons, Lowell Zehr, and Ken Gamlen completing the top five. Williams started eleventh and only led the final lap. The race was red flagged on lap 2 as a wild pileup happened coming out of turn 4. Thankfully, all drivers were ok but a lot of damage was incurred. Tod Simons led the opening two laps as Dan Williams and Rocco Leone swapped the lead numerous times for the next fifteen laps. On lap 18, Dan Williams spun handing the lead to Leone, who appeared to be going for his first ever feature win.

Claude Hutchings Jr. of Sauquoit won his fifth 15-lap 4-Cylinder Super Stock main of the 2007 season, this time from the eighth starting position. Hutchings took the lead on lap 6 from Matt Wetteerer, who took command himself from early leader Steve Randall on lap 3. At the finish, Chuck Powelczyk finished second, followed by Matt Wetterer, Chad Dupra, and Chris Kranz.

In the 4-Cylinder Enduro ranks, Josh Herbert won the 15-lap event over dad Jerry Herbert, Jerry Curcie Jr., Devon Rookey, and Jay Elhage.

Coming up this Friday July 20 at Brewerton Speedway is Beck Equipment / Scouting Night. In race action will be the mighty DIRTcar Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, ESDCA Mod Lites, and 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and the New York Modified Midgets. Gates will open at 5:30pm, with racing at 7:30pm. PIT NOTES…The win for Steve Huliszer was the second of his career, his first since June 6, 2003 at Brewerton Speedway. Hulsizer’s last appearance at Brewerton Speedway this season was on May 18. Seven different winners have won in the DIRTcar Modified division. Dale Caswell has 4 more wins to go to tie Larry Bezner for the most IMCA Modified wins in a single season.
