DIRTcar Modified feature winner Roy Bresnahan |
BREWERTON, NY – Parity has been the key word in the headline DIRTcar Modified division at Brewerton Speedway and on Friday night, Roy Bresnahan of Palermo became the sixth different winner on the 2007 race season in as many events. Bresnahan, in just his sixth start at the speedway in the Modifieds, came from the third position and took the lead from Tom Juhl on lap 12 and led the remainder of the 35-lap event. Bresnahan had to hold off the late race charge of former champion Chuck Bower and Kevin Bates for the $1,500 victory behind the wheel of the RJ’s Excavating No. 02 Bicknell machine.
Other winners on Syracuse.com / Colosse Cheese / Maple View Garage Night were Dale Caswell in the IMCA Modifieds, Dan Williams in the ESDCA Mod Lites, Claude Hutchings in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and Josh Herbert in the 4-Cylinder Enduro.
Roy Bresnahan of Palermo has never been a track regular at Brewerton Speedway in the headline DIRTcar Modified division, but decided during the winter to move up from the Sportsman ranks to the Big Blocks. The move paid off in dividends as the former Fulton Speedway two time Sportsman winner won his first ever DIRTcar Modified feature at Brewerton.
Bresnahan charged from the third position to take the lead from early leader Tom Juhl Jr. on lap 12 enroute to his exciting victory. In the late stages of the event, Bresnahan had to hold off a close Chuck Bower and Kevin Bates at the finish by .249 seconds. Fourth was Kenny Stafford in his best finish of the year followed by point leader Alan Johnson. Johnny Hill broke through recent bad luck for a strong sixth place finish, with Jimmy Phelps, Willy Decker, Jim Witko, and newcomer Billy Dunn completing the top ten.
Dale Caswell of West Monroe won his fourth consecutive 20-lap IMCA Modified feature on the year. Caswell came from the ninth starting position and took the lead from veteran Larry Bezner on lap 6 enroute to his win. Second was a close Kevan Cook, third was a hard charging Rob Keller Jr., fourth was Pete Anderson, and fifth was Bill Anderson Jr.
Dan Williams of Pennellville continues to be dominant in the ESDCA Mod Lite division with his sixth straight 20-lap feature win. This time, Williams had a close challenger in Justin Chrisafulli at the end who applied heavy pressure but had to settle for second. Third was Joe Gwilt, followed by Mike Mullen, and Joe Garafolo. Tommy Felicia led the first two laps with Joe Gwilt leading until lap 7 when Matt Magner led one circuit. Williams, who started eighteenth, took the lead on lap 8 and never looked back.
Claude Hutchings Jr. of Sauquoit won his fourth 4-Cylinder Super Stock feature of the year over Matt Wetterer, Ed Granoski, Chris Kranz, and Lee Hartzog. Hutchings started ninth on the field in the 15-lap affair and took the lead on lap 10 when early leader Chuck Powelczyk bobbled.
Josh Herbert recovered from a recent flip at Fulton Speedway to record his fourth 4-Cylinder Enduro main of the 2007 season. Herbert beat out father Jerry Herbert, Jerry Curcie Jr., Whitt Chilson, and Chris Bonoffski in the 20-lap event.
Coming up this Friday June 22 at Brewerton Speedway is A&P Auto Parts Night. In race action will be the DIRTcar Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, ESDCA Mod Lites, 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and Central New York Mini-Sprints. Gates will open at 5:30pm, with racing at 7:30pm. For more information, contact the track office at (315) 668-6906, the raceline at (315) 668-RACE, or visit www.brewertonspeedway.com.
PIT NOTES…The first Family Autograph session of 2007 was held during intermission on the frontstretch and enjoyed by all. The next is set for August 10. Car counts are very healthy in all divisions. Word is out on the street about the headline DIRTcar Modified division: anyone can win. Looking back through the history books, a season has never started out straight with six different winners in the first six events. No driver has visited victory lane more than once. Heartbreak for Vic Coffey at Brewerton once again – Coffey was challenging for second and the lead late in the going and went pitside after spinning. 2000 Champion Chuck Bower is desperately looking for his first Brewerton win since the 2003 season, which sure seems long ago.
