BREWERTON, NY – After two previous cancellations, the Brewerton Speedway finally opened the 2007 race season on Friday night, with fantastic weather, a tremendous crowd, and everyone eager to see a race at the popular Route 11 track. Visiting victory lane in the first exciting feature events of the year were Jimmy Phelps in the DIRTcar Modifieds, Pete Anderson in the IMCA Modifieds, Dan Williams in the ESDCA Mod Lites, Chuck Powelczyk in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks, and Josh Herbert in the 4-Cyldiner Enduros.
Jimmy Phelps of Baldwinsville came from the second starting position to take the lead from polesitter Steve Hulsizer on lap 8 and led the remainder of the 35-lap distance. Phelps, who won his first Brewerton feature in the Super DIRT Series event August 30 last season in the Troyer House Car, pulled the feature win driving his family owned Troyer No. 99j sponsored by J&B Installations.
Hulsizer had to settle for second and hold off a late charging Kevin Bates, who finished third. Willy Decker was fourth, followed by Scott Prentice. Completing the top ten, it was defending champion Alan Johnson, Jim Witko Jr., Chuck Bower, Tim Sears, and Sean Beardsley.
The always competitive IMCA Modified feature event saw a new face in victory lane in Pete Anderson of Cato. Anderson took the lead on the final turn of the 20-lap event from leader Greg Kimball, who fell to third. Anderson was able to lead the initial lap, with Rob Keller taking charge until a lap 14 restart when something broke on the front end of his machine, sending him pitside. Kimball was left with the lead and looking for his first ever win, until the final lap when Anderson took command. A hard charging Kevan Cook was second, followed by Kimball, J.J. Courcy, and Rich Keller.
Dan Williams of Pennellville won the 20-lap ESDCA Mod Lite feature event after leading the entire way. Williams had to work hard to hold off defending champion Tim Devendorf, who had to settle for second. Completing the top five, it was Lowell Zehr, Doug Williams, and Rocco Leone. The event was red flagged on lap 19 when several cars tangled in turn one, with Chuck DeMott flipping and catching fire. DeMott, thankfully, escaped unharmed from the scary incident.
Defending track champion Chuck Powelczyk of West Monroe won his first 4-Cylinder Super Stock main event of the 2007 season in dominating style. Powelczyk led the entire 15-lap distance, lapping up to the fourth place car. Second was Claude Hutchings Jr., followed by Matt Wetterer, Aron Backus, and Chad Dupra.
Josh Herbert won the 20-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro feature on a last corner pass of Jerry Herbert. Third was Jerry Curcie, followed by Eric Dawley, and Jeff Notaro.
Coming up this Friday May 11 at Brewerton Speedway is Little League Night. Featured will be the DIRTcar Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, ESDCA Mod Lites, and 4-Cylinder Super Stocks. Race time is set for 7:30pm. For more information, please contact the speedway office at 315-668-6906, the raceline at 315-668-6906, or visit the official website at www.brewertonspeedway.com.
BREWERTON PIT NOTES…The giant tractor tires lining the infield between the turns have been removed, pleasantly to the surprise of many. In their place are half buried street tires that keep drivers out of the infield, and most importantly, little or no damage to the cars. With the win by Jimmy Phelps, he has established himself as a heavy favorite for the remainder of the 2007 season and could figure heavily into the championship battle. New starter Glen O’Loughlin of Owego had his first night on the flagstand at Brewerton Speedway with former driver, Ricky Breed, as his assistant. Rookies making their debut in the DIRTcar Modified division included Kyle Lewis, Johnny Hill, Robbie Vormwald, and Mike Bowman. Willy Decker of Vernon, last season’s Utica-Rome Speedway titlist, is undecided about weekly competition at Brewerton, but with a strong fourth place finish could be considering otherwise. 39 ESDCA Mod Lites checked in the pits, with over 50 cars registered for competition this year. The Pennsylvannia Posse connection at Brewerton Speedway continues with Kevin Bates, Jim Witko Jr., and Dan Vauter all hauling several hours away from the Keystone state to race.
