SHEPPARD WINS SEASON OPENING DIRT BIG BLOCK MODIFIED FEATURE AT
BREWERTON SPEEDWAY
BREWERTON, NY...Matt Sheppard recorded
the season opening DIRT Big Block Modified win at Brewerton Speedway
last Friday in front of a near capacity crowd. Sheppard fought the
lead away from Billy Decker on lap-27 and then held off former track
champions Alan Johnson and Decker for the hard fought victory. The
win for the Randy Ross owned team was worth $2,000.
Jimmy Phelps led the opening lap of
the DIRT Big Block Modified feature from the pole starting position.
DIRT Big Block Modified rookie driver Kevin Bates took the top spot
away from Phelps on lap two. Veteran Danny Johnson became the third
different leader on lap four. Sheppard took the lead away from Danny
Johnson on lap-11 after starting in the eighth position.
Just at the halfway mark of the
35-lap main event Decker took the lead away from Sheppard. Decker
was displaying quite a show, flying around the top side of the
track. Decker would lead the talented field until lap 26. Sheppard
took over at that point. But, by no means was the race over, as it
was now Alan Johnson putting on the show. Johnson came from the 16th
starting position, but had to settle for second place by a car
length at the finish line.
Rob Keller won the season opening
20-lap IMCA Modified feature race last Friday night. Mike Smith,
Greg Kimball, Johnny Hill and Carmen Vona Jr. completed the top five
feature finishers. Keller took the lead from Greg Kimball on lap two
and never gave it back. Mike Smith made a late race charge to finish
second in the action packed main event.
Defending ESDCA Mod Lite Track
Champion Tim Devendorf won the season opening 20-lap feature race
last Friday night. Ray Donhauser, Joe Abbass, Lowell Zehr and Kevin
Donhauser finished in positions second through fifth respectively.
Devendorf took the lead away from Donhauser on lap-16 and then held
him off for the feature victory.
Russell Erwin was the race winner
of the season opening 15-lap Four Cylinder Super Stock feature race
last Friday night. Todd Williamson, Aron Backus, Chuck Powelczyk and
Lorrie Herbert finished in positions second through fifth
respectively. Erwin won the race in a photo finish over Williamson.
Professional DIRT Motorsports
competition will continue this Friday with the DIRT Big Block
Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Mod Lites and Four Cylinder Super Stocks
