ALAN JOHNSON CLOSES OUT 2006 WITH LEAF RACEWEAR 75 VICTORY AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY

Alan Johnson won the Leaf Racewear 75 at Brewerton.

BREWERTON, NY – 2006 Brewerton Speedway Modified track champion Alan Johnson of Phelps successfully defended his home turf by winning the Mr. DIRT 358-Modified Tour Leaf Racewear 75 on Thursday at Brewerton Speedway. Johnson started fourth and took the lead on lap 16 from Ted Lamb to lead the remainder of the distance. The third straight and a record fifth overall Brewerton Super DIRT Week 358-Modified Championship win for Johnson earned him $3,000 behind the wheel of the Jeff Rudalavage owned, Nativepoker.com sponsored, Bicknell No. 14j.

Andy Bachetti and Fulton Sportsman champion Shawn Donath led the 31-car Leaf Racewear 75 starting field down to the flags of Starter Matt Burdick, with Donath racing out to the early lead. Ted Lamb, racing Brewerton for the first time in many years, took the lead from Donath on lap six after an intense side by side battle.

Lamb’s lead was short lived, however, as Alan Johnson took the lead on lap 17, a lead which he would never relinquish. Heavy lapped traffic came into play throughout the race, but was never really an issue with Johnson who maintained a steady lead. At the halfway point of lap 38, the top five was Alan Johnson, Danny Johnson, Brett Hearn, Ted Lamb, and Matt Sheppard. A late race caution with 4 laps to go forced a quick green white checker finish, taking the event to 76 laps.

When the checkers flew, Alan Johnson was the winner by 1.042 seconds over Brett Hearn in his best Brewerton finish in quite some time. August 30’s Modified Super DIRT Series winner Jimmy Phelps was third, followed by Canadian Pat O’Brien, and Danny Johnson who charged to the front after a late race flat tire. Completing the top ten, it was Matt Sheppard, Pete Bicknell, Kevin Bates, Kyle Jacobs, and Ted Lamb. Seven minor cautions slowed the event.

Invader Mike Stratton came all the way from Ohio for his first ever Brewerton trackside appearance, and went home with his first ever feature win in the 25-Lap ESDCA Mod Lite Super DIRT Week Championship. Stratton had luck on his side as leaders Dan and Doug Williams got into a jingle on the final lap. Ken Gamlen came home second at the line, followed by Rocco Leone, Lowell Zehr, and Brandon Dennis, who would lead the first five laps. Dan Williams led laps 9-10 with track champion Tim Devendorf leading lap 11. Dan Williams took over again on lap 12 and led until the final lap as Stratton got by for the win.

With the completion of the Leaf Racewear 75 at Brewerton Speedway, the 2006 trackside season is now complete. The post-season now kicks in with the 2006 Brewerton Speedway / Fulton Speedway Awards Banquet scheduled for January 5, 2007 at the Syracuse Wyndham. BREWERTON RACE NOTES: 92 cars total for 2 classes. 56 358-Modifieds and 36-Mod Lites filled the Brewerton Speedway pits to capacity. The typical Super DIRT Week capacity crowd filled the Brewerton grandstands on a night when the temperatures dipped down into the high 40s at race time. Brett Hearn tripped the AMB Timing & Scoring system with a 14.603 (82.174mph) to lead all drivers in time trials. Second generation driver Ronnie Johnson was second with a 14.611 (82.129). Five heat races and three consis set the 31 car Leaf Racewear 75 starting field. The feature win was Alan Johnson’s fifty-second of his career at Brewerton Speedway.
