BREWERTON, NY...Alan Johnson opened the 2005 race season at
Brewerton Speedway with a dominating feature victory in the
35-lap DIRT Modified main event. Johnson took the top spot
away from Billy Decker on lap-20 and was able to hold on for
the victory in the Jeff Rudalavage owned, WPC Associates
sponsored ride despite a smoking engine in the final
circuits.
Danny Johnson raced out to the early lead at the start
of the DIRT Modified main event from the pole starting
position. Action slowed on lap one when Jim Witko and
several other cars came together on lap one. When the event
restarted Johnson regained the top spot, but action slowed
once again when Scott Prentice stopped on the track in turn
two. That would turn out to be the final caution period of
the race.
Billy Decker took the lead away from Johnson on the
restart. With ten laps complete Decker was being chased in
the top five by Alan Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Danny Johnson
and Pat Ward. It was on lap-20 when Alan Johnson took the
lead away from Decker. With the race staying under green
flag conditions Alan pulled away for the victory, but some
battles remained throughout the field.
Teammates Decker and Ward finished in positions second
and third. Defending Track Champion Tomkins was fourth and
former Track Champion Chuck Bower finished a strong fifth.
Tim Fuller, Bob McCreadie, Matt Sheppard, Mitch Gibbs and
Danny Johnson finished in positions sixth through tenth. The
feature field was represented with 18 former DIRT Modified
feature winners in the 24-car starting field.
Veteran Bill Anderson Sr. won the season opening 20-lap
IMCA Modified main event. Mike Chilson, Mike Jeffries,
Johnny Hill and Les Hubbard followed Anderson across the
finish line. Anderson took control of the field on lap three
and never looked back for the convincing opening night win.
Defending Mod Lite Track Champion Tim Devendorf crossed
the finish line first at the conclusion of the 20-lap Mod
Lite feature race. Matt Magner, Frank Doll, Don Fenner and
Chris Propheter finished in positions second through fifth
respectively. Devendorf took the lead away from Magner with
just two laps to go for the feature win.
Russell Erwin claimed his first ever feature race
victory in the 15-lap Four Cylinder Stock main. Rich
Murtaugh, Aaron Backus, Joey Delacruz and Lorrie Herbert
finished in positions second through fifth respectively.
Todd Williamson and Chuck Powelczyk both dropped out of the
event while leading. Erwin inherited the lead on lap-12 and
never looked back.
Jerry Herbert won the season opening Four Cylinder
Enduro of the season Friday night. Doe Lyboult, Randy
Shantel, Mike Getek Jr. and Art Durpa completed the top five
finishers in the 21-car starting field.
Action will continue this Friday at Brewerton Speedway
with the DIRT Big Block Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Mod Lites,
Four Cylinder Super Stocks and Ladies Races all on the
schedule. Show time is set for 7:30 p.m. For more
