Gary Tomkins with Car Owners Elaine & James Beachy after winning the 2004 DIRT Modified Track Championship.

BREWERTON, NY...Gary Tomkins earned the 2004 Brewerton Speedway DIRT Big Block Modified Track Championship with his fourth 35-lap feature win of the season Friday night. Tomkins passed Bob McCreadie with six laps to go and earned the $2,000 victory. The Track Championship at Brewerton Speedway was the third straight for the Elaine James Motorsports team.

Bob McCreadie raced out to the early lead at the start of the DIRT Big Block Modified feature from the pole starting position. After five circuits McCreadie continued to lead and was being followed in the top five by Ryan Phelps, Sean Beardsley, John Barker and Chuck Hebing. The multi-time Brewerton Speedway Track Champion looked strong as he attempted to pull away from the rest of the talented field.

At the halfway mark McCreadie was being followed in the top five by Phelps, Alan Johnson, Tomkins and Hebing. Pat Ward, Billy Decker, Matt Sheppard, Tim Fuller and Vic Coffey raced in positions sixth through tenth respectively at the halfway mark. Fans were actually witnessing a race within a race as Tomkins and Johnson battled for the 2004 track title at the D-shaped DIRT Demon.

Tomkins passed Phelps for the second position on lap-26. He then set his sights on the race leader. It was on lap-29 when Tomkins took the top spot away from McCreadie. Johnson was still in the picture as he moved into second behind Tomkins with five laps remaining. In the final laps Johnson tried to take the lead away from Tomkins, but he wasn't able to do so.

Tomkins went on to the victory and his first ever track title at Brewerton Speedway in his first complete season of competition. Tomkins also earned a Victoria 200 All Star spot. Johnson, Ward, Decker and Hebing completed the top five feature finishers. Hebing also earned a Victoria 200 All Star spot as he was the highest finishing 358 Modified.

Jeff Barker claimed his first feature win of the season in the rain-delayed 20-lap Dwarf Car / Mod Lite feature. Matt Magner, Joe Garafolo, Lowell Zehr and Dan Williams finished in positions second through fifth respectively.  Barker took the lead away from Darren Austin on lap-two and never gave it back.

Johnny Hill topped off a banner season by earning the IMCA Modified Track Championship behind his seventh feature race win of the season. Dale Caswell, Bob Bradt, Bill Anderson Jr. and Dave Talbot followed the new track champion across the finish line.

Chuck Powelczyk crossed the finish line first after the rain-delayed 15-lap Four Cylinder Stock main event. Jeff Herbert, Daryl Carl, Doug Farnsworth and Tony VanEpps completed the top five feature finishers. Powelczyk charged from the ninth starting position to the lead in just two circuits.
