TOMKINS WINS SECOND OF THE SEASON ON
MERCER'S ICE CREAM / BASSETT WHEELS NIGHT
BREWERTON, NY...Gary Tomkins won his second
Brewerton Speedway DIRT Big Block Modified
feature of the season Friday on Mercer's Ice
Cream / Bassett Wheels Night. Tomkins gained
several positions following the lap six
restart which was the key to victory. On lap
15 Tomkins took the top spot away from Ryan
Phelps and he would never look back. The
victory for the Elaine James Motorsports
DIRT Modified team was worth $2,000.
Chuck Hebing raced out to the early
lead at the start of the Mercer's Ice Cream
/ Bassett Wheels DIRT Big Block Modified
feature from the outside pole starting
position. After five laps Hebing continued
to lead and was being followed by Tim Sears,
John Barker, Craig Terrell and Billy Decker.
Hebing would lead the first 12-laps of the
main event.
Ryan Phelps took the top spot away from
Hebing on lap-13. Phelps, the second year
Big Block Modified driver was running strong
as he raced three wide with Hebing and
Tomkins. It was on lap-15 when Tomkins
slipped under both Phelps and Hebing to take
over the top spot. At the halfway mark
Tomkins was followed in the top five by
Hebing, Phelps, Chuck Bower and Tim Fuller.
Just when it appeared that Tomkins
would coast to victory multi-time Brewerton
Speedway Track Champion Alan Johnson started
to make a charge. On lap-29 Johnson moved
into the second position and continued to
close in on Tomkins. Tomkins and Johnson
were racing in heavy traffic and that would
play a part in the outcome.
With two laps to go Tomkins and Johnson
were now clear of lapped traffic. Johnson
was able to cut into the lead of Tomkins,
but he ran out of laps. Tomkins earned his
second feature win of the season at the
D-shaped DIRT Demon. Johnson had to settle
for second with Decker, Bower and Vic Coffey
finishing in positions third through fifth
respectively.
Johnny Hill won his second IMCA
Modified feature of the season Friday night.
Dale Caswell, Pat Pontello, Bill Anderson
Jr. and Les Hubbard followed Hill across the
finish line. Hill took the lead away from
Pontello on lap-15 and never gave it back.
Doug Williams claimed the win in the
20-lap Dwarf Car / Mod Lite main event. It
was the first career win for Williams who
became the first driver to win a feature
this season in a traditional Dwarf Car.
Frank Doll Jr., Don Fenner, John Behron and
Tim Devendorf completed the top five feature
finishers. Fenner was the highest finishing
Mod Lite. Williams passed Doll for the
victory with just two laps remaining.
Lorrie Herbert earned her second
straight Four Cylinder Super Stock feature
victory Friday night. Jeff Herbert, Ken
Klinkowsky, Russ Wassner and Tony VanEpps
finished in positions second through fifth
respectively. Ken Klinkowsky earned the
victory in the Second Across Finish Line
Wins Four Cylinder Stock Cash Dash. Lorrie
Herbert crossed the finish line first, but
in this event that wasn't the place to be.
Klinkowsky earned $50 for the six lap dash.
Jerry Herbert was the winner in the
competitive Four Cylinder Enduro main event.
Mitch Pietrowicz, Sam Curcie, Chad Guthrie
and Matt Fay completed the top five feature
finishers.
