Brewerton, NY…Bob McCreadie and Billy Decker added wings to their DIRT Modifieds for the “No Cars Barred” event and traded the lead several times before McCreadie nosed it out for the F.X. Caprara Car Companies Night feature victory. Other winners were Scott Nash in the Dwarf Cars, Brian Evenden in the 4-Cylinders, and Jean Amidon in the Jetettes Women’s Racing Series feature event.
The open competition style Modified feature meant that there were essentially no rules, other than the car had to be a Modified. McCreadie, Decker, Tim Fuller, and John Cunningham all added wings to their machines and removed some of the bodywork in an effort to play along with the “anything goes” theme. McCreadie started on the pole, and quickly opened up an advantage over second place Chuck Bower, running with his normal Currier Plastics 99B car.
The first caution of the race took place on lap 8 when Timmy Fuller slowed his M1 and went pitside for an adjustment. On the ensuing restart, Decker blasted by Bower and put his New England Financial Services 91 up to second.
Fuller was moving quickly, and in just three laps was running sixth. The yellow came out on lap 4 when the 27 of John Cunningham spun in turn four. This set the stage for a long green flag run, and a furious battle between McCreadie and Decker developed that would last the rest of the race.
Decker tried high and low, but could not find a way around McCreadie as the crowd roared in approval watching the two veterans go side-by-side for much of the rest of the distance. At the wire it was McCreadie by a nose over Decker, with the two both stopping in victory lane and needling each other during the post-race ceremonies.
Chuck Bower held on for third, with Tim Fuller the last car on the lead lap in fourth. Finishing fifth was the 30 of Chuck Mahaney, who was driving a 1997 Tobias Chassis he had in his shop.
The ESDCA Dwarf Car Feature event saw the 22x of Ken Gamlen come on to take the lead early, with Dan Boyce and Troy Van Allen chasing him. Van Allen worked his way into second on lap 5 and set sail after the leader.
As the leaders began moving into slower traffic, Van Allen got around the 22x of Gamlen and took command. Boyce ran into problems on the front straightaway and brought out the caution on lap 11, closing the field up once again.
Van Allen took off on the restart, but three laps later Ken Skinner stopped his 8 in turn two and the yellow lights came on again. It would be the final caution of the race, but the drama was not over.
Scott Nash now found himself in second, and he began to close on Van Allen. Nash had never won a feature at Brewerton, and was moving in quickly for the kill. As the lap counter turned to 17, Nash dove under Van Allen and took the lead, and Van Allen suddenly slowed with a problem on the right rear of his 2x and went to the pits. Nash now had no challengers as he sailed to his first ever feature win. Second was Steve Miller, followed by Joe Garafolo, Oly Johnson, and Matt Magner.
Brian Evenden thoroughly dominated the 15-lap 4-Cylinder feature. Evenden lead from start to finish, and had no serious challenges throughout the event. A good battle for second through fourth developed between Roger West, David Myrto, and Todd Williamson, with Kevan Cook right behind.
Williamson held second for most of the event, but fell to fourth toward the end, allowing West and Myrto to slip by. At the stripe it was Evenden with his second win of the season, followed by West, Myrto, Williamson, and Cook.
The Jetettes Women’s Racing Series had their season finale on Friday. Jean Amidon survived a serious challenge from Diane Allen to pick up the win. Allen finished second, with the 3 of Jenny Dion crossing the line in third.
The next race at Brewerton is Friday, September 15th. Exide Battery and Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Independent Associates present the New York State Championship night. The IMCA Modifieds, ESDCA Dwarf Cars, and 4-Cylinders will take center stage for extra distance races, and a demolition derby will top off an evening of family fun.
