Matt Sheppard Makes Late Race Charge For Brewerton Speedway Modified Win; $20 A Car Load Night Friday, June 10

By Dave Medler

BREWERTON, NY – June 3, 2016 –
In a hotly contested Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Big Block Modified feature Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway it was defending track champion Matt Sheppard that used a late race pass for the lead to end up in victory lane at the end of 35 laps.

Sheppard started the feature in 12th and steadily worked his way to the front, moving into the second position on lap 28 then setting his sights on race leader Chuck Bower. With just two laps remaining Sheppard was able to make the winning pass in turns three and four, getting by Bower. Once out front, Sheppard out-distanced Bower by 00.955 at the checkers.

Other winners on Ingles Performance night were, Ron Davis III (Sportsman) Jeremy Isabell (Mod Lites) Chuck Powelczyk (4-CYL) Chris Rombough (One-On-One Spectator).

Andrew Ferguson out-ran Joe August Jr. and the rest of the 24-car starting field to lead the opening lap of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Big Block Modified feature. August would take the top spot on lap 3 before Ferguson would drive back into the lead one lap later.

With 10 laps complete Ferguson would open a quarter of a straight away lead. Behind Ferguson, August, Matt Hulsizer, Chuck Bower, Rich Scagliotta waged their own battle in the top five.

Ferguson in just his second year in modifieds was running the race of his career in the division as he opened a straightaway lead with 15 laps showing on the scoring tower. Bower, August, Scagliotta, Rob Bellinger and Mike Bowman were having a battle royal for second through sixth.

A quick yellow would wave on lap 16 erasing the lead Ferguson built up. On the restart Bower took advantage as he blasted into the lead on lap 17. On lap 19 Ferguson wrestled the lead back with Bower taking the top spot back on lap 21.

With great racing going on throughout the field, Sheppard would work his way into second on lap 28 and set his sights on Bower. With Bower running the top and Sheppard the bottom, the pair would run in tight quarters until two laps to go. Going into three and four Sheppard found the speed he needed to get by Bower and go on to the narrow 00.955 of a second win over Bower. Robbie Bellinger, Andrew Ferguson, career best fourth and Jimmy Phelps rounded out the top five. Larry Wight, Rich Scagliotta, Pat Ward, Tim Sears Jr. and Mike Bowman finished sixth through tenth.

Another strong SUNY Canton Sportsman field filled the pits. It would take three heats and a consolation to set the 26-car starting field for the 25 lap feature.

Joe Sobotka would out-run Dylan Zacharias and the rest of the field to lead the early laps of the feature.

On lap 5 Alan Fink would get turned around in turn one with Mike Button, Rich Townsend and Brent Joy getting involved. Joy would get upside down in the incident. Joy was okay but his car was done for the night.

With Sobotka running the top and Zacharias the bottom, Zacharias on lap 7 was able to drive by Sobotka and into the lead.

With 10 laps complete Zacharias held onto a few car length advantage at the front of the field. Sobotka, Ron Davis III who started 14th, Tyler Trump, Kyle Fink, Glenn Forward and Gregg Kimball raced in a tight pack for second through seventh.

On lap 11 Davis would work his way into second and then it would take him three laps to drive under Zacharias and into the lead. Once in the lead Davis took off, winning by 3.378 at the checkers.

Behind Davis the top positions were in doubt until the finish. Zacharias finished a strong second, Beth Bellinger finished third from 16th, Jordan Bennett came from the back of the pack to finish fourth with Glenn Forward fifth.

The 20 lap Firehouse Subs Mod Lite feature came down to a last lap turn-four drag race to the finish that saw a first time winner.

Dave Brown would lead the first six laps until Brian Meyers was able to take the lead. On lap 8 going into turn one Meyers would spin collecting second place Brown. Both cars would continue at the back of the field.

From lap 9 to the finish Jim Bogett and Jeremy Isabell would put on a show. Bogett and Isabell, lap after lap, would run side-by-side with Bogett finding just enough speed running the top to be scored the leader at the line until the final lap. Going into turns three and four Isabell would pull even with Bogett setting up a mad dash to the finish that would see Jeremy Isabell win his first ever Brewerton feature win by .010 of a second over Bogett at the checkers. Jeff Sykes, Joe Isabell and Justin Williams would finish third through fifth.

Sam Curcie would lead the first six laps of the 15 lap JB Logging & Firewood Four Cylinder feature before Chuck Powelczyk took the lead. Once out front Powelczyk would shake off early season bad luck for his first win of the year. Jessica Herbert in her first race in two years would finish second, followed by Chris Bonoffski, Tim Dunn and Ken Pittsley rounding out the top five.

Fourteen cars entered the One-On-One Spectator races. Once again Chris Rombough out of Fulton, NY put his Subaru WRX in victory lane.
