Billy Decker Uses Last Lap Pass To Grab 58th Brewerton Speedway Modified Win Over Teammate Pat Ward; ESS Sprint Cars And Big Block Modifieds September 4

By Dave Medler- BREWERTON, NY - August 28, 2015 – As the saying goes in racing ‘The only lap you need to lead is the last one’. That’s just what Billy Decker did Friday at the Brewerton Speedway in the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment Modified feature.

Pat Ward would take the lead from Vinnie Vitale on lap-6 and set a quick pace throughout feature as his teammate Billy Decker who started tenth, would move into second on lap-15 setting up a classic battle with Ward that would see Decker grab the narrow win at the finish. It was Decker’s second win of the year and 58th overall at the ‘D-Shaped Dirt Demon’.

Other winners on Mirabito Night were, Mike Stanton Jr. (SUNY Canton Sportsman) Jeff Isabell Jr. (Pro Race Cars Mod Lites) Chris Bonoffski (Hilton’s Automotive 4 CYL) Ben Kiser (NY6A 600 Sprints).

Jim Witko Jr. would led the opening couple laps of the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment Modified feature before Vinnie Vitale set the at the front of the field until lap-6 when Pat Ward blasted into the top-spot.

Two quick yellows on lap-6 and lap-9 would slow the action the featured two and three wide battles throughout the field.

At the 15-lap mark Ward was setting a quick pace holding a one-second lead while Decker and Vitale ran side-by-side for second third. Behind the top-three, Chad Phelps, Ryan Phelps and Larry Wight were putting on a close battle for fourth through sixth.

With 20-laps complete Ward was still showing the way out front as Decker started chipping away at Wards lead. Vitale, Ryan Phelps, Chad Phelps and Wight were still fighting for position.

One lap later, lap-21 a quick yellow would wave erasing the lead Ward had over Decker.

Over the last 10-laps Ward and Decker would battle bumper-to-bumper and side-by-side with Ward holding a narrow advantage until the final lap. Going into turns one and two Decker was able to pull even heading into the final turns with Ward giving it one final blast on the top-side. Decker would find the bite he needed on the bottom exiting turn four to beat Ward to the checkers by a slim 00.154 at the checkers. Ryan Phelps, Chad Phelps and Larry Wight would finish third through fifth. Point’s leader Matt Sheppard, Tim Sears Jr., Tim Kerr, Chris Hile and Matt Hulsizer would complete the top-ten.

Chris Cunningham would grab the lead in the 25-lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature until lap-5 when Mike Stanton Jr. who flipped the week before would grab the lead.

At the 10-lap point Stanton held a few car length advantage over Alan Fink who ran alone in the second spot. Behind the top-two, James Carlson, Cunningham and Jack Meeks who started fourteenth slugged it out for third through fifth.

With 10-laps to go the rookie, Stanton still showed the way as Fink started cutting into lead. Carlson, Meeks and Gregg Kimball showed on the scoring tower as they keep the top-two within sight while racing for position.

Just when it looked like Stanton was going to pull away for the win the yellow would wave with just 3-laps to go putting drivers with a lot more experience right with Stanton in the shootout to the checkers.

Over those last 3-laps the 15 year old high school student drove with the cool of a veteran as he didn’t flinch blasting under the checkers for his first ever popular SUNY Canton Sportsman feature victory. Jack Meeks, Alan Fink, James Carlson and Ricky Yelle rounded out the top-five.

In the 20-lap Pro Race Cars Mod Lites, Brian Meyers, Lowell Zehr, Zack Babcock and Joe Isabell would lead laps in the early going until Jeff Isabell Jr. took the lead on lap-7. Once out front Isabell was the class of the out running his brother Joe the rest of the way. Zack Babcock, Jim Bogett and Jeff Sykes finished third through fifth.

The Hilton’s Automotive Four Cylinders saw a first time winner when Chris Bonoffski took the 15-lap victory. Bonoffski would take the lead on lap-5 from Colby Herzog and never look back. Ray Bechler, Chuck Powelczyk,  and Sam Curcie finished third through fifth.

Being the last point’s race of 2015 for the Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders Chuck Powelczyk was crowned the 2015 Track Champion.
