Matt Fink Upsets Brewerton Speedway Modified Field

By Dave Medler - BREWERTON, NY - August 7, 2015 - Coming into Friday night racing at the Brewerton Speedway, it had been since 2011 that Matt Fink picked up a feature win in the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds. All that changed in the 35-Lap feature as Fink outraced a star-studded field in his drive to victory lane.

Fink would take the lead on lap-two from Chris Hile and never look back in a race that went almost caution free. The win was anything but easy for Fink as he had to battle lapped traffic and a late challenge from Tim Sears Jr.  The margin of victory was 00.593 at the checkers. For Fink, it was his second career win at the ‘D-Shaped Dirt Demon.’

Behind Fink and Sears, Chris Hile would have a stout run coming home in third. Larry Wight and Matt Sheppard from 19th starting spot would round out the top-five.

Other winners on K-Rock 100.9 and CJ’s Car America night were, Earl Rudy (SUNY Canton Sportsman) Jim Bogett (Pro Race Cars Mod Lites) and Chuck Powelczyk (Hilton’s Automotive Four Cylinders).

The 25-Lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature provided two and three wide racing throughout the 24 car starting field that saw the finish come down to the final lap.

Mike Prentice would lead the opening 8-Laps before Steve Abt was able to wrestle the lead away from Prentice.

While Abt was out front setting the race pace, Prentice and Earl Rudy were just a few car lengths back racing bumper to bumper and side by side for second and third. On Lap-17 Rudy would grab second and set his sights on Abt who was quick on the top-side of the speedway.

On Lap-20, after working the bottom of the speedway, Rudy found the bite he needed to drive by Abt exiting turn four. Abt wouldn’t give up as he kept fighting back coming up short at the checkers by 00.675 at the finish. Mike Prentice, Mike Button and Gregg Kimball finished third through fifth.

In the 20-Lap Pro Race Cars Mod Lites, Jeff Sykes would lead the opening 19-Laps in search of his first win of the season but would come up one-lap short. Jim Bogett would move into second on Lap-12 and take off after Sykes.

Bogett, who ran the entire race on the top side of the speedway, saw something with the line Sykes was running and darted under Sykes in turns one and two on the final lap that proved to be the winning move of the race, beating Sykes back to the checkers. Mike Mullen, Zach Babcock and Joe Garafolo finished third through fifth.

Chuck Powelczyk picked up victory number 81 in the 15-Lap Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinder feature in convincing fashion. Chris Bonoffski, Colby Herzog, Sam Carista and Bill Carista chased Powelczyk across the line.

The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club was on hand for their yearly visit. Rob Casti grabbed the Modified win while ageless Norm Norton took the Sportsman victory.

This coming Friday, August 14, Schneider Packaging Company presents ‘Wings & Warriors’ featuring the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints and Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds. Also on the race card will be the SUNY Canton Sportsman and Pro Race Cars Mod Lites. The Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders will have the night off.

Adult grandstand admission on August 15 will be $20 with everyone 18 yrs. old and younger FREE. Pit admission is $35.
