Tom Sears Jr. Victorious In Caution Free Brewerton Speedway Modified Feature; Big Holiday Racing Week Ahead

By Dave Medler – BREWERTON, NY – June 26, 2015 – Twenty-four of some of the best Big Block Modified drivers anywhere in the Northeast signed into the Brewerton Speedway pits Friday night to do battle. After 35 caution free feature laps, Tom Sears Jr. stood in victory lane for the second time in 2015 season.

Sears took the lead from Vic Coffey on Lap-2 and then took off the rest of the distance out running second place Tim Sears Jr. to the checkers by over two seconds and lapping up to sixteenth place.

Other winners on NAPA Auto Parts night were, Earl Rudy (SUNY Canton Sportsman) Jim Bogett (Pro Race Cars Mod Lites) Chuck Powelczyk (Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders) Kevan Cook (NAPA Late Models).

Tom Sears Jr. and Vic Coffey would lead the hungry Tracey Road Equipment Modified field down to starter Dave Farney’s green flag with Coffey grabbing the early advantage in the 35-Lap feature. Coffey’s lead was short lived, Sears taking the lead on Lap-three.

With 10-Laps complete, Sears moved out to a comfortable lead as Tim Sears Jr., Coffey, Chris Hile and Matt Fink chased the leader.

Tom Sears would still show the way with 15-Laps showing on the scoring tower as Tim Sears Jr. was able to cut into his lead slightly. Hile, Fink and Coffey battled for third through fifth as they tried to keep the top-two in sight.

At Lap-20 Sears was on cruise control putting lap cars between himself and the rest of the top-five that remained unchanged.

With no yellows to tighten the field up, the top drivers in the point standings were slowly working their way through the field. Pat Ward ran eighth, Billy Decker ninth and Matt Sheppard tenth.

Over the remaining laps nobody challenged Tom Sears Jr. the rest of the way as he was first under the checkers by over two seconds over Tim Sears Jr.. Chris Hile, Matt Fink and Pat Ward finished third through fifth. Matt Sheppard, Billy Decker, Jimmy Phelps, Matt Hulsizer and Vic Coffey came home sixth through tenth.

In the wild 25-Lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature was the true meaning of, “It isn’t over till it’s over.” Who looked like a certain winner, wasn’t. A surprise winner from the 14th starting spot went to victory lane.

Stephen Denton would lead the opening lap before a quick yellow would bunch up the field for a restart. When the green came back out Tony Finch II who started 5th would be scored the new leader.

With 10-Laps complete Finch held a narrow lead as Jack Meeks, Denton, Alan Fink and Steve Abt were locked in a tight battle.

At the halfway point Finch was holding onto a slim three-car length advantage over Meeks, Denton and Fink as point’s leader Ron Davis III was rapidly gaining on the top-four from his 15th starting position.

With 20-Laps complete Finch opened his biggest lead of the race of almost a full straightaway over Meeks. Behind Finch the intense battle continued at the front between Davis, Fink and Mike Button from 17th.

The whole race would change after a quick caution on Lap-21, erasing Finch’s lead. When the green came back out the battle was on as Davis got a great run and took the narrow lead as Finch battled back. Finch and Davis made contact sending Davis spinning in turn one. Because of the contact Finch was sent to the rear of the field.

This would put Meeks and Earl Rudy from the 14th starting spot at the front for the dash to the checkers. When the green came back out Rudy got a great restart taking the lead and then the unexpected but hard-earned first Brewerton win running the bottom of the speedway. Jack Meeks, Alan Fink, Stephen Denton and Ricky Yelle finished second through fifth.

There was no stopping Jim Bogett in the 20-Lap Pro Race Cars Mod Lite feature. Bogett took the lead on Lap-2 and from there dominated the race, winning by over three seconds at the finish. The race from second through fifth was a tight and entertaining battle that saw Jeff Sykes, Joe Garafolo, Joe Isabell and Mike Mullen take those top-five spots.

Chuck Powelczyk remained undefeated in the Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders picking up his seventh win in seven starts this season. Powelczyk took the lead on Lap-9 and never looked back in the 15-Lap feature. Sam Curcie, Colby Herzog, Tim Dunn and Justin Buske chased Powelczyk across the line.

The Fulton Speedway NAPA Late Models put on a great race in their only visit of the year. The field of cars was split between Fulton regulars, the North Country and Ontario, Canada.

In the 20-Lap feature past Brewerton Speedway IMCA Modified Track Champion and Late Model rookie Kevan Cook lead every lap, picking up the big win. The battle from second on back in the top-five, top-six was in doubt right down to the checkered flag. Lee Gill, Charlie Sandercock, Chris Fleming and Alan Fink finished second through fifth.
