Matt Sheppard Back On Top At The Brewerton Speedway

By Dave Medler – BREWERTON, NY – June 19, 2015 – Defending Brewerton Speedway Tracey Road Equipment Modified Track Champion Matt Sheppard started off the 2015 season in championship form winning the first two races of the season showing no signs of giving up his title easily.

Recently Sheppard had finishes that he wasn’t happy with by his standards. On Friday night in the feature, Sheppard moved into second place on Lap-10 and then had a hard fought race for the top spot with leader Rob Bellinger, making the winning pass on Lap-19 of the 35-Lap main. Once out front Sheppard was hard on the gas winning by over four-seconds over teammate and points leader Jimmy Phelps for his third win of the year.

Other winners on Tracey Road Equipment night were, Ron Davis III (SUNY Canton Sportsman) Joe Isabell grabbed a pair of wins in the Pro Race Cars Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk picked up two wins in the Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders.

Ryan Bartlett who, in only his fourth start of the season after early season motor problems, led the opening two-laps of the 35-Lap Tracey Road Equipment Modified feature. On Lap-4 Rob Bellinger, using the outside groove, shot past Bartlett to be scored the new leader.

With ten-laps showing on the lap counter Bellinger still set the pace out front as Matt Sheppard moved into second from his starting position. Bartlett, Ryan Phelps, Chris Hile and Jimmy Phelps from thirteenth were locked in a fight for third through sixth.

On Lap-15 Bellinger still running the top and Sheppard on the bottom separated themselves from the rest of the field. Ryan Phelps, Bartlett and Jimmy Phelps battled in the top-five.

After working on Bellinger for a number of laps Sheppard it was on Lap-19 that he was able to work his way into the lead.

With 10-Laps to go Sheppard was on rails as he opened up a straightaway lead. Bellinger and Ryan Phelps ran side-by-side for second with Jimmy Phelps right there waiting for any mistake with Bartlett still right there in fifth.

Over the remaining laps and no yellows Sheppard cruised to the win. Jimmy Phelps narrowly got Bellinger for second with Ryan Bartlett and Ryan Phelps rounding out the top-five. Larry Wight came on strong for sixth after front end repairs from a competitor spinning in front of him in his heat race leaving Wight nowhere to go making hard contact. Chris Hile, Matt Fink, Pat Ward and Tim Sears Jr. completed the top-ten.

In the 25-Lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Ricky Yelle would lead until Lap-8 when a quick yellow would wave. On the restart Rich Townsend would go to the top of the speedway on Lap-9 to be scored the new leader. Yelle would take the lead back on Lap-11 with Townsend going back to lead one-lap later.

At the halfway point you could have thrown a blanket over Townsend, Ron Davis III who started 10th and Yelle as they fought for the lead. Behind the top-three Jordan Bennett and Mike Prentice showed in the top-five.

The turning point of the race came on Lap-14 when Davis looked like he was shot out of a cannon on the top of the speedway as he drove by Townsend and into the lead.

Over the last 9-Laps nobody seriously challenged Davis as he went on to his second win of the season. Rich Townsend, Ricky Yelle, Jordan Bennett and Mike Prentice finished second through fifth. Kevin Root, Brent Joy, Tony Finch II, Chris Cunningham and Earl Rudy came home sixth through tenth.

The Pro Race Cars Mod Lites ran a pair of 20-Lap features. In the June 5 holdover feature Joe Isabell picked up his fifth win of the year over Jeff Isabell Jr., Jim Bogett, Jeff Sykes and Justin Williams. In the June 19 feature the result was the same as Joe Isabell swept the night. Jim Bogett, Mike Mullen, Lowell Zehr and Jeff Sykes finished second through fifth.

Chuck Powelczyk keeps rolling along in the Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders. With his 18 year old VW Rabbit, Powelczyk won both 15-Lap features. In the June 5 holdover feature Powelczyk outran Ray Bechler, Colby Herzog, Sam Carista and Bill Carista. In the June 19 feature Chris Bonoffski, Colby Herzog, Jack Taskey and Ray Herzog finished second through fifth.
