Tom Sears Jr. Cools Off The Brewerton Speedway Modified Field

By Dave Medler –BREWERTON, NY – May 22, 2015 – On a race night that felt more like an October race rather than Memorial Day Weekend Tom Sears Jr. became the first Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature winner in 2015 not named Matt Sheppard.

After a long battle of over 20-Laps hounding race leader Chad Phelps, Sears was able to work his way by Phelps with just 6-Laps left in the 35-Lap feature. Once out front Sears was able to out-distance Phelps by under a second at the finish for his fifth career Brewerton win.

Other winners on 911 Restorations of CNY/TK99 night were, Jack Meeks, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Jim Bogett, Pro Race Cars Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk, Hilton's Automotive Four Cylinders. Seventeen vehicles raced in the One-On-One Spectator Races with Chris  Rombough the win.

Chad Phelps would jump out to the lead to start the 35-Lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified feature while behind Phelps the racing was two and three wide fighting for position in the early going.

With 5-Laps complete Phelps and Tom Sears Jr. ran nose-to-tail out front as they tried to get away from the pack. Behind the top-two Jim Witko Jr., Matt Fink and Joe August Jr. battled for third through fifth.

At the 10-Lap mark Phelps, Sears, Witko, Fink and now Larry Wight raced in the top-five.

On Lap-11 the yellow would wave when Billy Decker suddenly slowed and headed to the pits. Decker would return to the tail of the field.

At the halfway point Phelps built up his biggest lead running the top of the speedway as Sears Fink, Wight and Witko looked for a way to close the gap on the quick leader.

With 10-Laps to go Phelps still led but was having a hard time putting a backmarker a lap down allowing Sears to close in. Fink, Wight, Tim Sears and Jimmy Phelps from 20th starting spot raced hard for third through sixth.

On Lap-29, after working on Phelps the entire race, Sears was finally able to take the lead. Over the last 5-Laps Sears, Chad Phelps and Jimmy Phelps would come across the line in a one-two-three finish. Matt Fink and Tim Sears Jr. chased the top-three across the line.

In the 25-Lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Dylan Zacharias would lead the opening lap before Nick Krause would blast into the lead.

By Lap-10 Krause would drive out to a straightaway lead in his best race to date at the speedway. Rookie Steve Abt, Tony Finch II who started 13th, Rich Townsend 14th and Ron Davis III 16th raced for second through fifth.

At the halfway mark Krause still led but his lead was down to a car length as Finch closed in. Townsend, Davis and previous feature winner Jack Meeks from deep in the field were waiting for any mistake by the top-two.

After a quick yellow on Lap-18 the whole outcome of the race would change. Krause would suddenly slow when the rear axle broke with just a handful of laps left with victory within sight.

On Lap 24 the yellow would wave setting up a green, white, and checker finish between Finch, Davis and Meeks. On the final lap Meeks went to the the top of the speedway where Finch and Davis weren't blasting by them both for the narrow win. Jordan Bennett and Alan Fink finished fourth and fifth.

For the first time in the 2015 season Joe Isabell didn't end up in victory lane. Over the second half of the 20-Lap Pro Race Cars Mod Lite feature Jeff Isabell Jr., Joe Garafolo and Jim Bogett put on a show in the race for the win. At the checkers Jim Bogett was first under the checkers over Isabell and Garafolo. Zach Babcock had a strong run finishing fourth with Lowell Zehr fifth.

Chuck Powelczyk once again took the win in the 15-Lap Hilton's Automotive Four-Cylinders. Powelczyk would run down and pass Chris Bonoffski on Lap-11 and then drove away for the victory. Bonoffski, Sam Curcie, Brian Evenden and Colby Herzog would chase Powelczyk across the line.
