Matt Sheppard Starts The Season Two For Two At The Brewerton Speedway

BREWERTON, NY – May 8, 2015 (By Dave Medler) – On Friday night Matt Sheppard out of Waterloo, NY showed why he is the defending Brewerton Speedway track champion and one of the hottest Modified drivers in the early part of the 2015 season.

Starting 18th in a star studded Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar feature, Sheppard methodically worked his way through the field using every inch of the speedway taking the lead from Matt Hulsizer with two-laps to go and then going on to win his second straight 35-Lap feature in a row to start the season.

Other winners on Ehrlich Pest Control night were. Jack Meeks, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Joe Isabell, Pro Race cars Mod Lites, Chuck Powelczyk, Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders.

A wild scramble at the start of the 35-Lap Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifed feature saw Joe August and Jim Witko head pit-side with Witko returning.

When the race went to back to green Matt Hulsizer would take the top spot away from Chad Phelps when the yellow would wave again when Ryan Bartlett turned Larry Wight around. Race control sent Bartlett to the rear. Bartlett instead went pit-side with front end damage.

On the next restart Mike Bowman would be scored the new leader. With green flag laps being run Bowman and Hulsizer were running alone out front with Matt Billings and Chad Phelps trying to close on Lap-five.

With ten laps complete, Bowman hugging the bottom built up a quarter of a straightaway lead. Behind the leader, Hulsizer and Billings were in a tight fight for second and third with Chris Mackey and Phelps showing in the top-five.

At the halfway point there was a three-car fight for the top spot between Bowman, Hulsizer and Billings. Mackey was just a few car-lengths behind the top-three with Matt Sheppard starting to make his presence known in fifth.

On Lap-19, using the extreme top of the speedway, Hulsizer drove by Bowman to be scored the new leader.

With 10-Laps to go Hulsizer was on rails as he opened a 15-car length lead over Bowman. Sheppard had worked his way to third with Billings and Jimmy Phelps fourth and fifth.

With four-laps to go Sheppard cut Hulsizer’s lead down to a single car length. With two-laps to go in turn four, Hulsizer still running the top slid high out of the groove allowing Sheppard to shoot by and into the lead. Over the last two laps Sheppard pulled away for the win. Billings came home second with Hulsizer, Phelps and Rob Bellinger rounding out the top-five.

In the 25-Lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Ricky Yelle was running his best race ever after taking the lead on Lap-six.

With 10-Laps complete Yelle still showed the way by a few car lengths over Todd Root who was quick on the top of the speedway trying to close the gap. Still in the fight at the front of the field were Chris Hulsizer, Jack Meeks and Tony Finch II.

By Lap-13 Root closed in on the back bumper of Yelle with Meeks, Stephen Denton and Hulsizer running third through fifth. One lap later Root running the top shot by Yelle into the lead. Yelle wasn’t done as he dug deep retaking the lead the next time around with Meeks moving to second.

After a caution period it took Meeks, who started 12th, just two laps to be scored the new leader. Over the remaining laps Meeks was too strong and was the first under the checkers. Todd Root, Ricky Yelle, Tony Finch II and Sportsman rookie Chris Cunningham finished second through fifth.

Jim Bogett would lead the opening two laps before Jeff Sykes took over the lead in the 20-Lap Pro Race Cars Mod Lite feature.
Sykes would hold off Joe Isabell and Jeff Isabell Jr. in a tight fight for the lead until Lap-9 when Joe Isabell took over the lead and Jeff Isabell Jr. moved into second. Over the second half of the race the two Isabells ran a tight race that saw Joe pick up the win, his second in a row. Jeff Isabell Jr., Jeff Sykes, Jim Bogett and Mike Mullen finished second through fifth.

In the 15-Lap Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinder feature Chris Bonoffski would lead the opening 8-Laps before the yellow waved. On the restart Chuck Powelczyk would drive into the lead and then go onto his second win in a row.  Chris Bonoffski, Sam Curcie, Brian Evenden and Rick Wagner chased the winner across the line.
