BREWERTON, NY – May 1, 2015 (By Dave Medler) – Defending Brewerton Speedway, Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modified Champion Matt Sheppard served notice on Friday night that he wasn’t giving up his title easily.
Taking advantage of an opening night draw spot that put him on the front row, Sheppard took the lead at the drop of the green flag that saw him lead every lap of the 35-Lap feature. Teammate Jimmy Phelps could get within a few car lengths a couple of times late in the going but never seriously challenged for the win.
Other winners on Ferris Mowers night were, Dave Marcuccilli, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Joe Isabell, Pro Race Cars Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk, Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinders.
Sheppard bolted out to the lead at the drop of the green and by Lap-10 opened around a ten car length advantage. Behind Sheppard, Tim Sears Jr., Billy Decker, Jimmy Phelps and Larry Wight were not only chasing the leader but were locked in a tight battle for second through fifth just before a quick yellow.
With 15-Laps showing on the scoring tower Sheppard opened a straightaway lead in his FX Caprara Chevy/HBR/Mohawk Northeast/No.9H/Troyer. Sears, Phelps and Wight were still putting on a show for second, third and fourth with Decker sliding back to a distant fifth.
On Lap-18, coming down the front straight, Wight would get by Phelps for third. When Wight made the pass it was tight quarters between him and Phelps causing Wight to bang the wall causing a right rear flat. Wight made a trip to the pits and returned.
On Lap-21 Phelps moved into second and took off after Sheppard. With 10-Laps to go Phelps was slowly cutting into Sheppard’s lead. Sears, Decker, Vinnie Vitale and Ryan Phelps fought for third through sixth.
On Lap-29 the final yellow would wave setting up a six-lap dash to the checkers. Over the remaining laps Phelps threw everything he had at Sheppard, but Sheppard was too strong as he went under the checkers just over a second ahead of Phelps. Decker, Sears and Ryan Phelps rounded out the top-five. Chuck Bower, Vic Coffey, Pat Ward, Chris Hile and Matt Fink completed the top-ten.
Dave Marcuccilli in his Page Trucking/No. M1 will go in the record books as the first feature winner for the SUNY Canton Sportsman as a weekly class at the speedway.
In the 25-Lap feature great racing was found throughout the 24-car starting field. Todd Root would lead the opening 12-Laps before Marcuccilli took over the top spot. Once in the lead Marcuccilli would outrun Fulton Speedway Track Champion Ron Davis III to the checkers. Gregg Kimball, Earl Rudy and Alan Fink would round out the top-five. Rich Townsend, Mike Prentice, Jack Meeks, Tony Finch II and Stephen Denton would complete the top-ten.
In 2015 the Pro Race Cars Mod Lites will run Under TUSA Rules. In the 20-Lap feature 2014 Track Champion Joe Isabell went from fourth to the lead on the opening lap. Once out front Isabell would dominate the rest of the way winning by seven seconds over Jeff Isabell Jr.. Lowell Zehr, Jeff Sykes and Sam Usborne finished third through fifth.
Hilton’s Automotive Four-Cylinder 2014 Track Champion Chuck Powelczyk picked up where he left off last season by winning the 15-Lap feature in easy fashion. For Powelczyk it was his 72nd win at the speedway. Brian Evenden. Chris Bonoffski, Colby Herzog and Sam Carista rounded out the top-five.
