Alan Johnson Returns To Brewerton Victory Lane

BREWERTON, NY August 27, 2010 – A few weeks ago Alan Johnson was involved in a vicious wreck that sidelined his Original Pizza Logs/Jake Spraker Used Cars No.1j Bicknell for repairs. Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Johnson returned with the car and promptly put in victory lane. Johnson got by race long leader Willy Decker on lap 22 and from there cruised to the 35 lap Big Block Modified win. For Johnson it was his second win of the year at the D-Shaped Dirt Demon.

Other winners on SUNY Canton ID Night were, Gordy Button NAPA Late Models, Rich Keller IMCA Modifieds, Gary Jeffries Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Willy Decker and Tony Steiner led the 27 car starting field down to the green with Decker grabbing the early advantage in the 35 lap DIRTcar Big Block Modified feature.

The first yellow of the race would come out on lap 4 involving Jason Rood and Dale Planck in turn 4 with Planck sustaining heavy damage ending his night early.

By lap 10 Decker built up a full straightaway lead as Chad Phelps gave chase running alone in second. Behind the top-two, Mike Bowman, Alan Johnson, Pat Ward and Danny Johnson were locked in a tight battle for third through sixth.

On lap 11 Roy Bresnahan appeared to have something break on his front end sending him hard into the turn four wall. Bresnahan was okay but his car went pit side for the night.

With 15 laps showing on the lap counter, Decker and Johnson broke away from the field, Danny Johnson, Bowman and Pat Ward showed in the top-five.

With Decker running the top and Johnson on the bottom, Decker appeared to slip up in turn four allowing Johnson to drive by and be scored the new leader on lap 22 just before a quick yellow for debris.

Once in the lead Johnson survived a late yellow and then was able to drive away for the easy win. Pat Ward came on late to finish 2nd, Matt Sheppard, Willy Decker and Larry Wight who won the consi finished fifth.

“With all those yellows we didn’t know how it was going to be with the fuel we had in it,” said a smiling and relieved Alan Johnson in victory lane. “This is going to help pay off the $3,500 repair bill.”

“He (Willy Decker) took off pretty good early, I didn’t know if he could hold that pace or not. He just seemed to slow there a little bit; we were able to take advantage of it. I was nervous; I was trying to get all I could out of it. Between the tires and the track I didn’t know if we had enough or if anyone was there.”

In The 15 lap NAPA Late Model feature Gordy Button picked up the win, it was anything but easy the entire race. Button had constant pressure from AJ Kingsley, Tim Sears Jr. and Dale Caswell the entire distance as Button picked up the narrow win. AJ Kingsley who led twice, Tim Sears Jr., Dale Caswell and Harry Halliday rounded out the top-five.

It took Rich Keller 20 years to pick up his first ever IMCA Modified win last Friday night. Now Keller can call himself a two time winner as he picked up his second straight 20 lap victory. Keller had a rear spring come out of his about halfway to give him a tough handling car, and then he had to hold off a hard charging Dale Caswell to be the first under the checkers. Mike Smith, Brandon Carvey and Kevan Cook finished third through fifth.

Tim Devendorf got by Doug Williams on lap 3 of the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite feature and looked to be heading to the easy win. On lap 18 the yellow would fly that changed the whole race. Last weeks winner Gary Jeffries found the bite he needed on the extreme bottom of the track as he got by Devendorf on the final lap to grab his second win of the week. Jeffries won Tuesday night when the Mod Lites ran as part of the World Of Outlaws Late Model show. Tim Devendorf, Doug Williams, Matt Magner and Frank Sobotka rounded out the top-five.

Chuck Powelczyk out distanced Stephen Denton for his 7th 15 lap Four Cylinder Super Stock win of the year. Finishing behind the top-two was Jessica Herbert, Keith Shay and Doug Elkins in his first ever start.
