Justin Barger Wins Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints Return

BREWERTON, NY….The 17 year wait for the return of the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints to the Brewerton Speedway is now in the records books. After 25 hard fought laps on the D-Shaped Dirt Demon, defending series champion Justin Barger led every lap in the A-Main over local favorite Jason Barney on the tacky and quick Brewerton surface. For Barger it was his third ESS win of the year.

Other winners on SUNY Canton night were, AJ Kingsley NAPA Late Models, Rich Keller IMCA Modifieds, Matt Magner Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Stephen Denton Four-Cylinder Super Stocks.

After winning his heat and the Cobra Trailer and Coaches Dash, Barger out raced fellow front row starter Shawn Donath to the stripe to lead the opening lap of the 25 lap Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints A-Main.

With 10 laps showing on the SUNY Canton scoring tower, Barger opened up a huge lead as he had already started putting lapped cars between himself and Jason Barney using every inch of the speedway darting in and out of traffic. Blake Breen, Donath and Lance Yonge fought for third through fifth.

On lap 14 a quick yellow would fly for Jeff Cook who spun in turns one and two erasing the huge lead Barger built up. Barger would have four lapped cars between himself and Barney for the restart.

With 10 laps to go Barger once again took off from Barney and the rest of the field, Quebec Nationals winner Yonge, Donath and points leader Steve Poirier showed in the top-five.

A final yellow would fly with less than a handful of laps remaining, giving Barney one last shot at Barger for the race win. With Barger running the bottom of the speedway Barney had to go to the top for any shot at win. Over the final laps Barger hit his marks on the bottom as he was the first under the checkers.  Jason Barney, Lance Yonge, Steve Poirier and Shawn Donath rounded out the top-five.

“This feels good, last year we ran here and we had engine problems so we didn’t even get to run the feature,” Barger said after putting his Cortlandt Auto Body Motorsports No. 32 in victory lane. “To come back here and run as good as we did in the heat race, run good in the dash, lead every lap of the feature, I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

“We touched one of the tires in one and two and knocked the tow in out a little bit, it was a bit of a handful after that. We did pretty good, it had good forward drive coming off the corners. I didn’t see anyone the whole race.”

AJ Kingsley grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the 20 lap NAPA Late Model feature and held off early challenges from Gordy Button. Over the second half of the race Kingsley had to fight off constant pressure from 8 time feature winner to pick up his first ever Brewerton Speedway Late Model win. Dale Caswell, Gordy Button, Chuck Meyer and Joe August Jr. rounded out the top-five.

Rich Keller led every lap of the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature. The win was anything but easy for Keller as he had to hold off Kevan Cook who hounded him lap after lap right down to the checkers. For Keller it was his first ever Brewerton Speedway victory. In an emotional victory lane with family and friends, Keller said it was his first win in 20 years of trying.

In the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite feature Lisa Thomas would lead the opening 3 laps before Matt Magner grabbed the top-spot on lap four. First Magner would hold off challenges from Tim Devendorf and then Lowell Zehr tried every trick in the book to find a way around Magner. Magner held his line lap after lap to be the first under the checkers. Lowell Zehr, Tim Devendorf, Gary Jeffries and Jeff Isabell Sr. rounded out the top-five. It was Magner’s first win since the 2004 season.

Stephen Denton picked up his 7th win of the year in the 15 lap Four-Cylinder Super Stock feature. Chuck Powelczyk, Keith Shay, Jessica Herbert and Jerry Herbert chased Denton across the line.
