JIMMY PHELPS GOES TO VICTORY LANE FOR THE SIXTH TIME
BREWERTON, NY – The 2010 DIRTcar Big Block Modified season for Jimmy Phelps just keeps rolling along and shows no signs of slowing down behind the wheel of his J&B Installations, Andy Phelps Motorsports, and No.99j Troyer. Phelps took the lead from Billy Decker on lap 27 and was never challenged the rest of the way for the 35 lap feature win. For Phelps it was his sixth Brewerton Speedway win of the year.

Other winners on Beam Mack night were, Dale Caswell in both the NAPA Late Models and IMCA Modifieds, Terry Lapham Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites, Stephen Denton Four-Cylinder Super Stocks and Paul Applebee won the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club feature.

Chad Phelps out raced the field to lead the opening lap of the 35 lap Big Block Modified feature as Johnny Hill gave chase.

With 5 laps showing on the SUNY Canton scoreboard, Phelps, Hill and Mike Bowman broke away for a three-car battle for the lead, Jason Rood and Mike Mahaney ran in the top-five behind the leaders.

Between lap 7 and lap 8 Bowman found speed running the top of the speedway as he went from third and into the lead.

With 15 laps showing on the lap counter Bowman led by 10 car lengths over Phelps. Behind the top-two, Hill, Rood, Mahaney and Billy Decker ran in a tight pack as they fought for top-five spots.

At the halfway point Bowman was still in control now leading by a half a straightaway over Phelps. Hill, Mahaney, Rood and Decker now had company in Chuck Bower and Jimmy Phelps, making it a six car fight for positions.

A quick yellow flew on lap 19 for an implement tire that found its way on the track. On the restart Phelps found bite on the bottom and retook the lead while Decker moved into second. After working on Phelps for 5 laps Decker was able drive around Phelps and into the lead on lap twenty-four. On lap 26 Jimmy Phelps moved into 2nd and set his sights on Decker.

The final caution would come out on lap 26 for a slowing Michael storms. On the restart Phelps Troyer stuck like glue on the bottom as he was able to drive by Decker to be scored the new leader on lap twenty-seven.

Over the remaining laps Phelps drove away from Decker for the victory. Billy Decker, last week’s winner Ryan Phelps, Chuck Bower and Matt Sheppard rounded out the top-five. Pat Ward who finished 6th received the Dig Safely New York $500 Bonus Bucks.

“For years we struggled bad here, to come out here and pick up six, who knows, hopefully were not done yet,” said Phelps in victory lane. With his win he now leads Matt Sheppard by 77 points in the season Brewerton Speedway title chase.

Phelps said the late caution really helped him pick up the win, “I knew we had a really good car, I was really hoping to break free of traffic when I did get by Billy (Decker) briefly, it was just really narrow there down on the bottom. I was afraid if we held it down there it was going to be tough to get by him. I got in the wall once and was praying that a tire wasn’t going down, that was my fault. Other than that the track was nice. What a comeback from last week, the track crew did a great job my hats off to them.”

Terry Lapham led every lap of the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite feature. The win was anything but easy for Lapham to pick up his first ever win. He had to hold off early challenges from Clayton Brewer III, then Rocco Leone and finally heavy pressure from Joe Garafolo to land in victory lane. Finishing behind Lapham and Garafolo were, Lowell Zehr, Jeff Isabell Sr. and Justin Crisafulli.

The most serious incident of the night happened between Lapham and Leone when they were racing for the lead on lap fourteen. Coming down the front straight entering turn one they touched wheels sending Leone into a couple of hard barrel rolls. All track officials after looking at the video said it was just a racing incident. Leone exited his car unhurt.

Dale Caswell totally dominated the NAPA Late Model feature for his 7th win of the year. Caswell took the lead on lap 5 from Jim Southard and from there drove away for a half a track lead and win. Alan Fink, Jim Southard, Gordy Button and Joe Gwilt rounded out the top-five.

In the IMCA 20 lap feature Dale Caswell picked up his 2nd win on the night. Caswell took the lead from Rob Keller on lap 8 and was never challenged the rest of the way. Kevan Cook, Rob Keller, Mike Smith and Rich Keller rounded out the top-five.

Stephen Denton and Chuck Powelczyk were once again the class of the field in the Four-Cylinder Super Stocks with Denton picking up the narrow win over Powelczyk. Keith Shay, Jessica Herbert and Lorraine Powelczyk finished third through fifth.

It was the Applee show in the 15 lap Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club feature. Paul Applebee and John Applebee traded the lead back and forth with Paul picking up the win over John. Rob Casti, Jim Hilimire and Don Hyatt rounded out the top-five.
